Great words.... I never know what I am supposed to feel or experience when the time changes... I just set my clocks and soon I forget it and think it's normal... I always look for a golden egg in your basket of words Betsy.... There were many today but for me in particular.. I love the phrase "rediscovering practices of calm." I honestly believe that regardless of the time of day or season or expectations that we impose on ourselves... there is this cool garden with trickling streams and fresh aromas that calls us to calm.... And I listen intently for the words "the voice I hear calling on my ear".... And if I find that place of calm, I indeed hear that Voice!

Such lovely imagery, Barry, there in your tranquil garden. And, I totally agree! I also appreciate and am trying harder to remember that often the imbalance comes entirely from my own flailing. Once I stop resisting, all is well. Thanks for your thoughts!

Equanimity is a term I think about a lot. It comes from Latin, aequo animo, equal mind. Thanks for your thoughts on how one can balance the mind; and for reminding me (on this celestial equinox) that balance starts in the mind. The fault lies not in the stars but in ourselves - didn’t Shakespeare write something like that?

I knew there was a term I was forgetting as I was writing! I think equanimity is really the answer to the question of how to uncover balance. And, yes, as is often the case, Shakespeare is among our most reliable teachers. I wonder if he kept chickens? :)

It’s Saturday. Your essay arrived on Wednesday. I’m only getting to it today. I’m retired but have been too busy to read it until today. When I retired I began saying “yes” to many things which had previously been out of reach given my work schedule. I am learning about the degree to which I can obligate myself but I seem to be a slow learner. I would do well to pay attention to the chickens - and the birds- and the muskrats - and, and, and. I don’t have time to comment further. I need to google equinoxes. But before that I need to see if the correct plural of equinox is equinoxes or equinae. And then there is Wordle and Quordle. And checking the forecast to see if it’s time to plant beets. And……

So much to smile about in this comment, Darrell. First, thank you for making time to read Chicken Scratch even with so much else going on. Second, while still working, I've been training myself to say "yes" to fewer things. My hope is that the habit will persist when and if I am able to retire. Anyway, I tend towards introversion, so it is a sanity saving measure. Third, I looked up the plural of equinox before settling on equinoxes but felt a little inner squirm at what seems an awkward ending. As for planting beets, I'd suggest letting the ground dry out a bit from recent rains before disturbing the soil. And, if you want to really fine tune, you could plant during the waning moon phase. At least, that's what the old farmers say. :)
