It’s here, this bud,
this bloom,
this opening flower
rising
untroubled
by what may become.
Beginning. It’s here.
It’s here,
and it’s here,
and it’s here.
No ping, no flare,
no ballyhoo,
no shimmering sphere
falling
to affirm
what I already feel.
Inspiration. It’s here.
It’s here,
and it’s here,
and it’s here.
Do I know
nature knows
nothing of time,
only length and rhythm
emerging, concluding
eternally turning?
Intention. It’s here.
A year. It’s here.
And here, and here, and here.
For many, January is s a time to mark achievements and make resolutions. I’m not wired that way, but I do find myself reflecting on who I am and whether there’s reason to make any adjustments. The answer is always, “Yes!” Yes, to accepting the parts of me that need extra tenderness. Yes, to acknowledging where I’ve been stubborn or stuck. Yes, to admitting how much I don’t know. And yes, hell yes, even as I wish it could be otherwise, to all the times I’m given to practice what feels hardest to learn.
In recent weeks, two friends lost their mothers. Others bid farewell to people and pets who were dear to them. Suns rose and set. Weather came and went. Around me, the living world carried on through miseries and miracles, whether I knew it or not.
In the scheme of things, my circle of influence is so very small, my control so very limited. But I am given opportunities, at every turn, to notice, appreciate, ask, and receive. All of that is here. For me. All the time.

Now it’s your turn. Are you a resolution-maker? A mover-shaker? Crafting lists you’ll check off before next January? Or are you more of the go-with-the-flow type? Resolved to be unresolved? Let’s meet in the comments and compare notes.
Those who’ve been here a while know that my posts occasionally turn up as poetry. It’s just one more avenue for me to explore what seems to want exploring. Thanks for coming along.
I don’t put anything here behind a paywall. Even so, many loyal supporters choose to support the work with paying subscriptions, an invaluable gift. I understand that’s not an option for everyone, but I hope you’ll consider it if it is within your means. One time contributions and tips can be made here.
Your post-likes, shares, and restacks also help by giving more people more ways to find my work. Really, that makes a world of difference. So thank you, in advance.
Oh, I love these lines so much:
Do I know
nature knows
nothing of time,
only length and rhythm
emerging, concluding
eternally turning?
Especially the end, "concluding/eternally turning." No conclusion is ever really the ending, is it? I also felt a great tug at "And yes, hell yes, even as I wish it could be otherwise, to all the times I’m given to practice what feels hardest to learn." One of the comforts of reaching the age I have is that, even when I'm in the deep, I know that I'll get back to a place of gratitude. That everything is temporary (damnit and thank you). Your circle of influence may be small, but it is deep. So thankful to find your words here this morning.
I've been thinking about this moment when I was young, in the backseat of our minivan, discovering poetry, and realizing "My Goodness, it's everywhere! And everything!" Struck a chord! Thanks!
